Kwasie-Bu - Gladys
Stagnant water just behind Gladys's house is an example of the poor drainage she complains about.
Gladys is 32, and has lived in Kwashie-Bu for six years, having moved from another area of Accra. She works selling used clothes to support herself and young son. Gladys cannot think of any positive aspects to living in Kwashie-Bu. She does not feel safe, citing the risk of bag-snatching on the street, and is worried about the sanitation and drainage in the area.
Gladys dislikes the careless dumping of rubbish, including faeces. People in the area defecate onto plastic bags and discard these with other household waste. Gladys believes that the poor sanitation and drainage contribute to the diarrhoea and malaria that she and her son have suffered.
Gladys herself has access to a clean toilet and bathhouse in the set of shacks she lives in. There is also a water tap that flows all week with good water that she is sometimes prepared to drink.
